Decisions are not always choices.

Raluca

And Instinct is not Intuition.

Grasping these two things can completely change the way you approach decision making.

These understandings lead to having more choices and giving you choice.

Decisions are really choices only when we are conscious of how we arrive at them, when we are aware of what and how impacts us in our decision making. That means bringing to awareness emotions, values and what filters we apply in sorting the information we need to weight in our decisions.

Think about the times when:

  • you were anxious about deciding or, quite the opposite, eager to arrive at a conclusion;

  • you felt overwhelmed about everything you need to account for in your decisions or irritated by the unnecessary details;

  • you were uneasy with making a decision because that would reduce your options or absolutely dining to make a decision;

  • you were told that "you bring too much of your feelings" at the table ...or on the contrary you were blamed for being cold-blooded;

  • you decided quickly and later regretted it or you took all the time you could till you decided and just gather more and more info/read something more;

  • you dismissed risks being brought forward by the "nay-sayers" or ended up fighting against the consensus;

  • you decided without any account for the external advice feedback or, on the contrary, followed external advice and didn't listen to your inner voice;

In all these cases you had choices you might have not realised.

 How much you are driven by opportunity vs necessity

How much you focus on the details vs the big picture

How much you look at the upside vs downside

How much emotions and history influence you

How much you really listed to external opinions

How much you look for changes or constants

are expressions of sub conscious processes that shape our decisions.

By learning what your subconscious predispositions are when dealing with decisions you can take steps towards managing them. That's when you start making choices.
